The Crandall Public Library Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the recipient of the first annual Henry Crandall Award. Richard J. Bartlett, principal in the law firm Bartlett, Pontiff, Stewart & Rhodes, P.C., was selected for his lifelong commitment to improving the community. Dick, as he is lovingly called, is a native of the Glens Falls region. While educational and professional pursuits led him elsewhere, Dick always returned to his Glens Falls home. His distinguished career (.pdf) began in Glens Falls with private law practice in 1949 and has included service as New York State Assemblyman, Justice of the New York Supreme Court, and Dean and Professor of Law at Albany Law School. Despite a busy professional life, Dick has always found the time to give back to his community. He has served on several local non-profit boards and volunteered countless hours, often serving quietly, behind-the-scenes. As for his commitment to Crandall Public Library, Dick has always been a fervent advocate. He provided invaluable advice, encouragement, and support when the Library proposed to become a district in 1992 and again during the recent expansion and renovation project. His efforts helped grow Crandall Public Library into the exceptional resource it is today. Dick clearly reflects the positive values of Henry Crandall, including generosity, perseverance, loyalty, compassion, civic pride, and philanthropy. For these reasons, Dick Bartlett has been chosen as the well-deserved first recipient of the Henry Crandall Award.
Dick will be honored at a special reception hosted by Crandall Public Library on Friday, October 1, 2010, 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Hiland Park Country Club. Light fare, an open beer and wine bar, and musical entertainment will be offered for $50 per person. The event is open to the public.
